Tom is the founder of Except, a company focused on sustainable, systemic solutions to global challenges. He created the Symbiosis in Development (SiD) framework, combining systems thinking and co-creation to drive innovation in cities, circular economies, and sustainable design. As the director and designer, he’s led the development of bio-based architectural and urban designs, including the Merredin Algae Plant, Shanghai’s vertical agriculture towers, Salesforce Park in San Francisco, and ReGen Villages in Oosterwold, Almere. His projects integrate energy systems, ecosystem services, resource metabolisms, and business models to promote sustainability and improve the health and happiness of communities worldwide. In 2016, Tom introduced the concept of Catalytic Buildings, and in 2019, he launched Orchid City, the first entirely self-sufficient city model. He also leads innovations in areas like supply chain optimization software and sustainable agriculture systems, such as Polydome. He’s a frequent keynote speaker and author, shaping the future of urban development and bio-based architecture.
